Rohan at the Louvre
By Hirohiko Araki

s-l1600

After Glacial Period and The Sky Over the Louvre comes another completely original story with stunning art by a leading mangaka, bestselling author of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Rohan, a young mangaka, meets a beautiful mysterious young woman with a dramatic story. Seeing him draw, she tells him of a cursed 200 year old painting using the blackest ink ever known from a 1000 year old tree the painter had brought down without approval from the Emperor who had him executed for doing so. The painting meanwhile had been saved from destruction by a curator of the Louvre. Rohan forgets this story as he becomes famous but ten years later, visiting Paris, he takes the occasion to try and locate the painting. Little does he know how violently powerful the curse of it is until he has the museum unearth it from deep within its archival bowels…

NBM Graphic Novels Honored with Two Eisner Award Nominations for 2018

eisner-nominee

The 2018 Eisner Award nominations recognized NBM Graphic Novels with two nominations this year, with books being represented in the same category, Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art). The prestigious Will Eisner Award honors exemplary work from the past year in comics and the award ceremony is held annually at San Diego Comic-Con International.

The nominated comics and talent are:

EFA, Monet: Itinerant of Light

72

The life of the great French painter, one of the founders of Impressionism, is narrated in lush comic art reminiscent of his style. From the Salon des Refuses (“Salon of the Rejected”) and many struggling years without recognition, money and yet a family to raise, all the way to great success, critically and financially, Monet pursued insistently one vision: catching the light in painting, refusing to compromise on this ethereal pursuit. It cost him dearly but he was a beacon for his contemporaries. We discover in this comics biography how he came to this vision as well as his turbulent life pursuing it.

About EFA
EFA is a pen name for Ricard Fernandez, a Spanish artist who left school at 16 to pursue his dream of being in comics. He has since published quite a few graphic novels and series. This is his first translated into English.

Cyril Pedrosa, Portugal

Portugal_cover_72

From the author of the acclaimed Equinoxes comes a return to roots that serves as spiritual renewal. Comics artist Simon Muchat is stuck. Suffering writer’s block, uninspired, vegetating as a school art teacher, he is losing direction and his taste for life, until one day he is invited to appear at a comics convention in Portugal, the country his family came from and which he hadn’t seen since his childhood. The experience proves cathartic. Even though he is not Portuguese himself and is a foreigner there, so many elements are familiar to him. Meeting its lively citizens, full of the zest for life, his distant yet welcoming family bringing back fond early memories, all prove reinvigorating, the breath of fresh air he so badly needed.

Based on his own experience, Pedrosa narrates this return to his roots in a deeply compelling and warmly human way. This is his bestselling graphic novel with over 100,000 copies sold in France and a winner of many prizes including Best Graphic Novel at the Angouleme Festival and FNAC Best GN.

About Cyril Pedrosa
Born November 22, 1972 in Poitiers (Vienne). A big comic reader during childhood and adolescence, Cyril Pedrosa first went into  scientific studies. After some trial and error, he finally studied animation design at the Gobelins, a Parisian establishment dedicated to careers in the moving image. He went on to work on Disney animated feature films such as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Hercules” where he acquired a speed of execution and a sense of movement that will later serve him well. Meeting writer David Chauvel inspired him to turn to comics.

A rising star in graphic storytelling, his unique work is a product of his animation background combined with his literary influences of Borges, Marquez and Tolkien.

“For over forty years NBM Graphic Novels has committed itself to bring some of the greatest graphic novels from across the world to North American audiences,” said publisher Terry Nantier.  “Acknowledging the fine work by both EFA and Cyril Pedrosa by the Eisner nominating committee only reinvigorates that commitment.”

A full list of nominees can be found at the Eisner Award website.

Marie Antoinette: Phantom Queen
By Annie Goetzinger & Rodolphe

mariecov_small.indd

During the 1930s, Maud, an artist, discovers she has a psychic gift. The first signs manifest themselves in the royal gardens of the Trianon where gradually she understands that a woman from the beyond is attempting to communicate with her.

The revelation is beyond belief: it is the ghost of Marie Antoinette appearing to her to share a terrible secret that has tormented her for centuries. After being guillotined, the Queen is said to have been thrown into a common grave but then exhumed and buried with her husband, Louis XVI, in the Saint-Denis basilica.

Yet the ghost tells Maud that her remains are still in the pit, on which a chapel stands today. The queen asks Maud to move her body to the right place so she can finally find peace and no longer haunt people.

Part fantastic ghost story, part biography, this is a delicious beautifully illustrated look into French revolutionary history by the artist of the bestselling Girl in Dior.

“A sprightly tale told with lavish scenes and witty dialogue.”
