Oldies Are Still Goodies (And Hitting People With Rolling Pins Is Still Funny)

Our friend, Andrew “Captain Comics” Smith, wrote an insightful piece in the April 16th Comics Buyer’s Guide about the growth of reprints and some of the titles he’s a fan of including our Forever Nuts line, which reprints the earliest Mutt & Jeff, Happy Hooligan, and Bringing up Father.

His thoughts?

I enjoyed them all, for historical reasons if nothing else, but Bringing up Father was a revelation. For a strip with one central joke “Maggie beaning Jiggs with a rolling pin” George McManus kept the strip fresh and exciting day after day. And the art! While Jiggs remained a cartoon, McManus’ women were drawn in photo-realistic style and beautifully modeled the elaborate fashions of the time.

THE MIAMI HERALD Reviews THE INNER SANCTUM

The Miami Herald recently reviewed Ernie Colón’s The Inner Sanctum and shared the following thoughts on the book:

Billed as an adaptation of the classic radio show (with no other story credits), veteran editor and artist Colòn conducts a virtual art clinic here, showing his deep mastery of composition, design, figure drawing, expression, use of blacks and more in this collection of hoary guilty pleasures and cheap thrills. Throughout, his art is in service to the storytelling, creating clear narratives with tension and emotion. It’s nothing more (or less) than solid entertainment.

Not too shabby…
