NBM In Stores This Week: BREAKING THE TEN

Hitting the shelves of comic stores this week is the latest work from author Sean Michael Wilson, the intriguing graphic novel BREAKING THE TEN. What has already been hailed as one of the “Top 16 Graphic Novels of June” by Paul Gravett, BREAKING THE TEN is the story of a man who, after losing everything, devises a plan to break each of the Ten Commandments in an act of revenge against God.

BREAKING THE TEN
Volume One of Two
Sean Michael Wilson & Michiru Morikawa
When David loses his wife and child in a tragic car accident he decides, in anger at the cruelty of the event, to turn against God. He sets out to systematically break each of the Ten Commandments in order to both spite God and to get his attention! But will he go all the way, and break the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’? Two mysterious figures, Mr White and Mr Black, try to win David over to their side: the religious or the humanistic. Deeply sad in parts and comical in others, this modern story explores age old questions: Is there a God? And if there is, does that God care about us? By the author of The Story of Lee.

More NBM in May Previews: Zombillenium-Ride or Die!

Also being solicited this month is Zombillenium, the horror spoof series by Arthur de Pins.

Zombillenium is a theme park run by all of Hell’s creatures, from a witch intern to a newly cursed demon, and all the mummies, vampires, zombie unions, and ghosts in between. Renowned French author and animator, Arthur de Pins, created this stylized world that looks straight out of a sophisticated animated film.

Currently, De Pins is working on an animated adaptation of the series.  As a preview, the French band, Skip the Use, released a  four minute animated music video featuring the Zombillenium characters. Watch here!

Take a look at the Zombillenium theme site and don’t forget to buckle your seatbelt!

Zombiellennium Vol.1: Gretchen

ZOMBILLENIUM
Vol. 1: Gretchen
Arthur de Pins
Francis von Bloodt, vampire, a good family man, manages the theme park Zombillenium. They don’t just hire anyone, at Zombillenium: mere mortals need not apply, the park works only with genuine werewolves, vampires and zombies. This is what Aurelian gets to discover as, burnt out, deceived by his wife, he finally gets hired in spite of himself in this strange business. Gretchen, a plucky trainee witch, helps him get around…

ZOMBILLENIUM
Vol. 2: Human Resources
Arthur De Pins
Tempers are flaring around Zombillenium, the monster amusement park run by monsters. When one hires only the dead (or witches!) in a region where unemployment is in the double digits, one must expect some friction. But things get particularly ugly when the park’s security is breached from two sides: activists and a very strange visitor, mom to two peculiar sons the head of the park seems to remember from somewhere… Gretchen and Aurelian do their best to help save a precarious explosive situation! All presented in De Pins’ trademark tongue-in-cheek jubilant black humor and stunning art.

ZOMBILLENIUM VOL.3

ZOMBILLENIUM
Vol. 3: Control Freaks
Arthur de Pins
There’s excitement in the Zombillenium horror themed park run by actual monsters. Brought in by Behemoth himself, the vampire Beauford Jaggar Carniegie III is officially supposed to help CEO Francis in managing the park. But the employees expect the worst: isn’t he known as a cold-blooded killer? If one looks more closely, the reasons for his coming may seem less anodyne than announced. Of course, his mission is to increase return on investment for the shareholders, but for Behemoth that return has to be in souls. Francis is appalled but obligated to kowtow to the almighty consultant, determined to take power and pervert the rules of Zombillenium. Meanwhile, Aurelian goes through a bad patch. Depressed by his immortal status and the absurdity of his life… sorry, his death, he’s burned out. And burnout, in a powerful demon, can be devastating. Held back in extremis by Gretchen, he avoids the worst. This is timely, because Gretchen has a plan for him… A particularly biting new episode of Zombillenium in which we discover the underbelly of the most monstrous amusement park in the world.

Geary’s Treasury of Murder collection expands to the Twentieth century and the first “crime of the century” is the result of a love triangle turned deadly. Rick Geary delves into the lives of famous architect Stanford White, showgirl Evelyn Nesbit, and  her husband Harry K. Thaw. Madison Square Tragedy is available now in stores everywhere. It is also available to order in this month’s Diamond Previews.

MADISON SQUARE TRAGEDY

A Treasury of XXth Century Murder:
MADISON SQUARE TRAGEDY
The Murder of Stanford White
Rick Geary

Stanford White is one of New York’s most famous architects having designed many mansions and the first Madison Square Garden. His influence on New York’s look at the turn of the century was pervasive. As he became popular and in demand, he also became quite self-indulgent. He had a taste for budding young showgirls on Broadway, even setting up a private apartment to entertain them in, including a room with… a red velvet swing. When he meets Evelyn Nesbit, an exquisite young nymph, cover girl, showgirl, inspiration for Charles Dana Gibson’s “The Eternal Question” and for the later movie “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing,” he knows he’s on to something special. However, Evelyn eventually marries a young Pittsburgh decadent heir with a dark side who develops a deep hatred for White and what he may or may not have done to her, setting up the most scandalous murder of the time.

LOUISE BROOKS

LOUISE BROOKS, Detective
Rick Geary

Stepping away for a bit from his growing and impressive body of work in the Treasury of Murder true crime series, Geary creates a fictional story around a favorite actress: Louise Brooks. Spun around her actual brief meteoric career as a smoldering film actress who popularized bangs, Geary fantasizes about her coming back to her home town of Wichita where she becomes intrigued by a murder involving a friend, a famous reclusive writer and a shady beau. Not before she gets herself in great danger will she emerge with the solution the police fails to grasp!

Also available from NBM this April: More Louvre and Baseball-Themed All Star!

Alongside GUARDIANS OF THE LOUVRE, we are still offering our most recent installment of the Louvre Collection: CRUISING THROUGH THE LOUVRE.

David Prudhomme’s Cruisng Through the Louvre takes a different path through the museum.  With his careful use of colored pencils, Prudhomme shows specific examples of how, in this case, life imitates art. From Ancient Egypt to the cell phone era, people’s actions are instantly recognizable in comparison.

 CRUISING THROUGH THE LOUVRE

The Louvre Collection:

CRUISING THROUGH THE LOUVRE
David Prudhomme

Author David Prudhomme meanders through the Louvre, feeling as if in the panels of a giant comic while he himself is creating his own. In this institution, all manner of people from all over the world rub elbows quietly. So he decides to cruise through the Louvre at a quick pace, not to look at the art but to observe the people and their interaction with it. He discovers: a group of students somehow stuck together just like the shipwrecked on the Raft of the Medusa; a man behind the Seated Scribe, as if attempting to read over his shoulder; in the hall of antiquities, a woman placing her head in a lion’s mouth… For two hours, Prudhomme is witness to a strange silent and casual choreography, danced in the midst of one of the most prestigious museums in the world…

This April: The Guardians will Guide you through the Louvre

Coming from NBM Graphic Novels in April is the next installment of The Louvre Collection by respected Japanese creator Jiro Taniguchi.

In GUARDIANS OF THE LOUVRE, the protagonist is ill during an excursion to Paris. While visiting the Louvre Museum, he falls into a feverous delusion. When he awakes, the museum is eerily empty save for an otherworldly guide, a celestial Guardian of the Louvre in charge of preserving the souls within the artwork. Together the two take an expedition through the ages, meeting famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh-unsuccessful in his career and living where the rent is low, witnessing the evacuation of the Louvre during the Nazi occupation during World War II, and admiring the life behind the priceless works of art.

The illustrations flow as would a masterful anime film, reminiscent of the work of Hayao Miyazaki. The graphic novel was recently on the Publishers Weekly Top Ten Graphic Novels for Spring ’16 list. PW summarizes: “Taniguchi’s entry in this long-running series of graphic novels commissioned by the Louvre veers between fantasy and introspection to explore the meaning of art in our lives.”

GUARDIANS OF THE LOUVRE

When the fever breaks somewhat, he sets out on his visit and promptly gets lost in the crowded halls of the Louvre. Very soon, he discovers many unsuspected facets to this world in a museum in a journey oscillating between feverish hallucination and reality, actually able to speak with famous painters from various periods of history, led to crossroads between human and personal history by… the Guardians of the Louvre.

Also released Spring 2015 was the gritty story of Benjy Melendez, leader of the Ghetto Brother Gang. In Ghetto Brother, author Julian Voloj and artist Claudia Ahlering captured Melendez as living New York history, focusing on his Puerto Rican immigrant roots, his crypto-Jewish background, and his historic push for peace among the gangs, cleaning up the streets of New York, clearing the way for a new expression in the form of Hip Hop. It was recently named one of the best Non-Fiction Book of 2015 by the Jewish Book Council. The book is now in its second printing.

GHETTO BROTHER

GHETTO BROTHER- Warrior to Peacemaker
Julian Voloj, Claudia Ahlering
Introduction by Jeff Chang, author of “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation”
An engrossing and counter view of one of the most dangerous elements of American urban history, this graphic novel tells the true story of Benjy Melendez, a Bronx legend, son of Puerto-Rican immigrants, who founded, at the end of the 1960s, the notorious Ghetto Brothers gang. From the seemingly bombed-out ravages of his neighborhood, wracked by drugs, poverty, and violence, he managed to extract an incredibly positive energy from this riot ridden era: his multiracial gang promoted peace rather than violence. After initiating a gang truce, the Ghetto Brothers held weekly concerts on the streets or in abandoned buildings, which fostered the emergence of hip-hop. Melendez also began to reclaim his Jewish roots after learning about his family’s dramatic crypto-Jewish background.
