The award ceremony for the International Manga Awards 国際漫画賞 in Tokyo was held this week. Our book got bronze award from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs 外務省
Here is my artist comrade, Akiko Shimojima, accepting the award, the inside of my copy of the award… and close up of a board that was signed by all winners and a bunch of well known Japanese manga-ka creators who came along to the ceremony.
My first post of 2017 on the NBM blog and a very nice one: we won a medal in the International Manga Awards!
Winners were officially announced a recently. My book SECRETS OF THE NINJA, got a medal in the ’10th International Manga Award’, 国際漫画賞 organised by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs 外務省
They give out awards every year to international creators – and I’m the first British person to get one. Just the bronze medal award, in this case, but that is still very good, as only about 5% of the entrants get chosen for the final awards.
Myself and the artist, Akiko Shimojima, are very pleased to get this. We will attend the award ceremony in Tokyo on Feb 6th.
Just finished writing the script for volume 2 of BREAKING THE 10… and I’m pretty happy with it. Pretty and Happy!
This reader reviewer from amazon says:
“I really Love the wit and dark humor twisting within a very deep plot! Our pro/antagonist has such a point to make…I cannot wait for the 2nd Vol.”
Thank you and me too! So, now stage 1 of that second volume is complete.
Here is more from volume 1, in which the characters discuss anarchism, is the usual whimsical way of joker Mr Black!
Here are two pages from our book BREAKING THE 10 from NBM Publishing in which the main character, David throws away his ‘miraculous medal’ to our lady in disgust (after the death of his wife and child).
My own ‘miraculous medal’ was indeed given to me by my grandmother in Scotland after a trip to Lourdes, France – when i was about 18.
But dont worry, i did not throw it away. I use it as a keyring.
BREAKING THE 10
“Fresh, challenging and superbly enthralling, this is a book no saint or sinner should miss”

I’m especially proud of this Duck version of a well known prayer that I made for our book with NBM, ‘Breaking the 10’. It shows the lighter side of the book and Mr Black’s trademark sarcastic wit.

My new book with NBM ‘Breaking the 10’ arrived with me today, here in Japan, and I was very happy to get them. It looks good – well printed, clear, a nice smooth velvety feeling to the cover and a good size.
I think this is my 21st or 22nd book now ( I’m losing count!), but the excitement of receiving a box full of your new book from the publisher is still something that thrills me.
One of the good things about comic books taking so long to make – by the time you get the printed book in your hand it is often a year of more since you wrote the script, and you can read the book afresh.
So, I am now going to read my own book…
Check out and order the book here:
The erudite, well dressed, and still slim, comic book expert, Paul Gravett, lists our book as one of his titles to look out for in Jun 2016:
BREAKING THE 10, Vol 1 – by myself (or someone who looks very much like me!) and Michiru Morikawa.
“When David loses his wife and child in a tragic car accident he decides, in anger at the cruelty of the event, to turn against God. He sets out to systematically break each of the Ten Commandments in order to both spite God and to get his attention! But will he go all the way, and break the commandment “Thou shalt not kill”? Two mysterious figures, Mr. White and Mr. Black, try to win David over to their side: the religious or the humanistic. Deeply sad in parts and comical in others, this modern story explores age old questions: Is there a God? And if there is, does that God care about us?”
And dont forget your chance to vote in EISNERS, comic pros –
By the same team as the above NBM book we also have this book in this year’s nominations:
‘Lafcadio Hearn’s “The Faceless Ghost” and Other Macabre Tales from Japan’
Category 15. Best Adaptation from Another Medium’
voting closes June the 17th:
