Charlie Hebdo: Our thoughts must go to the French cartooning community

I am absolutely in shock over what happened at their offices.

Wolinski and Cabu I can tell you are giants in cartooning and comics history in France. All of these people that died are now

MARTYRS

Martyrs to Free Expression

How can one defend oneself against such senseless attacks? do we shut up, like Sony did on The Interview? To express one’s opinion or to parody something means risking our life?

I remember how the French comics community, among others, immediately e-mailed me on 9/11 expressing their shock and solidarity. I am giving back now, as we all should in our comics community.

France has always been a leader in championing free expression. Much of our ideals come from the French revolution. Charlie Hebdo embodied fearless no holes barred satire, screw the consequences. They had been firebombed in 2011 and obviously showed no submission as a result. That takes real courage. Those Islamic extremists have only accomplished the contrary of what they wanted.

My thoughts are with you, Charlie Hebdo, and France in general.

Charlie Hebdo: may your next issue skewer Islamist extremists to the max.

The book is in! One of our most beautiful productions. A quarter-bound (with cloth around the spine) hardcover with raised titles and spot lamination which hopefully this photo shows you…

We received a few advance copies for press via air freight. The full stock comes into our distributor IPG’s warehouse in a month.

We are busy setting up quite a launch for this, with Kinokuniya NYC involved and lots more… details to come! Meantime, the Wall St. Journal has just put up a piece on the growing involvement of women in comics and this is well represented in it. From the looks of the interest we’re getting from the press, working with DIOR US as well, this should only be the beginning…

See more about the book.

A Great Year For Us: Thank You! Happy 2015!

Dog Butts and Love

We’ve done well this year, most notably achieving 50% growth in the general trade (general bookstores, libraries, Amazon, and such)! We’re up significantly overall with such successes as Beauty and All Star being warmly received and going back to press rapidly but also with Bilal’s entry in the Louvre collection (we have some major names coming up for this series, stay tuned!) and Jim Benton’s snarky collection Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff like That. And Cats.

But we’ve also been building a reliable backlist, as we call it in publishing, with such perennial sellers as Zombillenium (#3 out next summer), The Discovery in Comics series (Religion is next, Fall ’15!), the comeback of Dungeon, the Louvre collection and many authors, European and American.

Well, goodbye to an excellent 2014 where, thanks to you, NBM turned a significant corner and is on the up and here’s to an even better 2015 for all!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dior US is working with us on ‘Girl in Dior’

I’m proud to say Dior US is enthusiastically on board for our beautiful GN Girl in Dior coming everywhere in March. They are already busy helping us get the word out to their connections in the fashion press on this stunning book which I anticipate to be one the highlights of our coming months.

Girl In Dior

Besides that, Kinokuniya, the very cool international bookstore chain with a slant on art books, will be hosting the launch party for it in March in New York, with an exhibit of the book’s original art.

I’ve already fielded an interview with a major newspaper… more on that soon…

I have a feeling this one is gonna blow the roof off!

After the sellout of Beauty and with other strong books coming (see in particular Ghetto Brother), we’re all just kinda feelin’ warm and fuzzy right now.

SPX: ‘Beauty’ was the hit!!

Absolutely loved it, dozens of people making a beeline straight for our booth at SPX last weekend to get a copy of Beauty, Hubert and Kerascoet’s latest book after Miss Don’t Touch Me.

Well, both arrived late at our warehouse, grumblmumbl, and we couldn’t have it at the show. But thank God dozens of people took us up on our offer to take their order then and there and ship it free freight this week which we’re busy doing now!

BEAUTY

The buzz has been growing unbelievably on this title! but maybe not so unbelievable when you see how utterly gorgeous this book is.

It’ll hit stores in about 3-4 weeks. we’ll keep you posted!

This success pushed our SPX experience into a new record. Saturday was mad busy.

Loved every minute of it!

NBM in October: Street View, a beautiful accordion book.

Something unusual for October, a book you can fold-out all the way with a street scene, one side evolving by day, one by night. A visual treat!

Street View

STREET VIEW
Pascal Rabaté
A visually incomparable treat and a brilliant homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window, this unusual accordion book opens in two directions. One, a series of ten tableaux on a street scene as it evolves during the day. The next on 10 evening tableaux of the same view. A window may serve as a source of light and fresh air, but it also presents a view onto the life of a street and its many other windows, each a separate scene of its own, with its multitude of on-going stories developing before your eyes. Within those windows, you can witness the lives of single people, couples, families, stories of love, separation and possibly even… murder.
8×11, 48pp, full color accordion book, hc, $27.99 9781561639083

NOIR THRILLER SET
The Broadcast and Family Ties
Two thrillers in one engrossing set!
In the Broadcast, on the day of the historic broadcast of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles which triggered panic in many places it sounded so real, a family in the countryside fears for its life and also has to deal with strangers and neighbors coming in for help. The tension brings to the surface long suppressed emotions and conflicts and a violent reckoning in a dark stormy night.
Hoping to secure a future for his children, an aging Alaskan crime boss in Family Ties looks to retire and divide his empire amongst his three heirs. But when his idealistic son refuses the inheritance, the old man disowns him. This turns out to be a fatal mistake when he sees his cold-blooded daughters use their new-found power and influence against him. From repulsive and stinking of fish she becomes perceived as magnetically beautiful, which does not help her in her village. MISS DON’T TOUCH ME
Hubert & Kerascoet
Now in an omnibus complete large format hardcover edition. Paris in the thirties. The ‘Butcher of the Dances’ is on the prowl for young loose women. Blanche works as a maid along with the only family she knows, her sister, fun-loving Agatha. Suddenly, Blanche loses her to what she saw was murder but others only write off as suicide. She decides to take matters into her own hands. In her pursuit, she ends up hired into a luxury house of call-girls. She even becomes quite good at certain lascivious practices while still remaining a virgin! But she also doesn’t lose sight of her goal: find the Butcher.

What they said of this:

“Miss Don’t Touch Me is really nothing more than a murder mystery and period piece, but it sure is a good one—so good, in fact, that you may find yourself needing to be reminded how un-ambitious an unpretentious it actually is. ” –Newsarama

“It’s hard to imagine a sequential art story better than this!”
