Review Round-Up! LOUISE BROOKS: DETECTIVE! GHETTO BROTHER! 101 OUTSTANDING GRAPHIC NOVELS!

Here’s what the critics are saying:

LOUISE BROOKS: DETECTIVE by Rick Geary

Be sure to check out a fantastic interview with Rick conducted at the Huffington Post where he discusses Louise Brooks and his work.

“This Louise Brooks adventure is supposed to just be a little detour from Mr. Geary’s ongoing work on his Treasury of Murder true crime series. However, there’s definitely a case to be made for more Louise Brooks adventures.”

Comics Grinder

“It is without question that Geary is the modern master of real-life murder cartooning…Louise Brooks: Detective is a breezy summer detective fiction.”

Trouble With Comics

GHETTO BROTHER: WARRIOR TO PEACEMAKER by Julian Voloj and Claudia Ahlering

“Gorgeous black and white watercolor illustrations enhance this inspiring true story…a fascinating examination of the events that led to the emergence of Hip Hop. It’s also a personal story of survival, loss, oppression, and reclaiming one’s heritage.”

Foreword Reviews

“Excellent for both teens and adults interested in urban issues, this account shows how difficult it can be to bring about social change and how unexpected positive outcomes can result.”

Library Journal

101 OUTSTANDING GRAPHIC NOVELS By Stephen Weiner

“As with all works of this type, many will argue about what should or should not have been included. That’s part of the fun! However, as in earlier editions, the book serves as a subjective but entertaining introduction to this increasingly influential medium and will remain an effective starting reference for the general reader. Librarians serving graphic novels fans will find this short guide to be a useful readers’ advisory tool.”

Treasury of XXth Century Murder:
THE LIVES OF SACCO & VANZETTI
Rick Geary
Now in paperback!

Rick Geary tackles the most controversial case of the 20th century. Anarchists Sacco & Vanzetti were accused of robbery and murder but so many supposedly damning pieces of evidence were questionable their guilty verdict elicited massive protests around the world. Geary presents us with all the twists and turns, appeals and dubious evidence after presenting us the human face of the two men, demonized by many, turned to martyrs by many others, in his usual unflappable way.
“Top ten of 2011” –Onion’s AV Club
“One of The 13 Can’t Miss Graphic Novels of 2011.
Chalk one more up for the history books and another great contribution to the country’s wealth of graphic lit.” –Kirkus Reviews
“As with all the books he’s done in this series, he does his research, lays out the facts and evidence, and allows you to decide for yourself. That’s not only a hallmark of strong storytelling, but of confidence by the storyteller. He doesn’t need to pull you around by the nose if he has done his job right, and no one does
the job right like Rick Geary. This is another incredible effort by a creator who simply seems to never swing and miss.”-Comics Waiting Room

MADISON SQUARE TRAGEDY

A Treasury of XXth Century Murder:
MADISON SQUARE TRAGEDY
The Murder of Stanford White
Rick Geary

Stanford White is one of New York’s most famous architects having designed many mansions and the first Madison Square Garden. His influence on New York’s look at the turn of the century was pervasive. As he became popular and in demand, he also became quite self-indulgent. He had a taste for budding young showgirls on Broadway, even setting up a private apartment to entertain them in, including a room with… a red velvet swing. When he meets Evelyn Nesbit, an exquisite young nymph, cover girl, showgirl, inspiration for Charles Dana Gibson’s “The Eternal Question” and for the later movie “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing,” he knows he’s on to something special. However, Evelyn eventually marries a young Pittsburgh decadent heir with a dark side who develops a deep hatred for White and what he may or may not have done to her, setting up the most scandalous murder of the time.

“Geary’s art is amazing in setting the stage in a booming New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. A thought-provoking, wonderfully delineated read.” –Comics Worth Reading

TREASURY OF XXTH CENTURY MURDER
LOVERS’ LANE
The Hall-Mills Mystery
Rick Geary

New Brunswick, New Jersey, Thursday, September 14, 1922. Reverend Hall and Mrs. Eleanor Mills take a stroll in the town’s park in the evening. Shots are heard. 2 days later, their bodies are found laying on the ground very neatly next to each other with her hand on his thigh, love letters strewn around them, the scarf on her neck covering up the deep bloody slit in it. Reverend Hall, himself married, was in an open secret of an affair with Mrs. Mills, a married woman of his choir. The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinating investigation which the nation’s press hungrily devours. Alas, no clues or evidence are sufficient to make an indictment stick. Was it suicide? A jealous rival? The case reopens again 4 years later as new information is brought to light, indicting the reverend’s wife but she is an upstanding member of her community, denying to the last that her husband had any affair…

“As usual, he proves to be an adept and thoroughly engrossing storyteller and Lovers’ Lane is another excellent entry in this rather admittedly macabre series.”

NBM in May: Rick Geary’s LOUISE BROOKS, DETECTIVE

Writing about May in the dead of winter is wishful thinking, but we are most excited about our new Rick Geary book! Taking pause from his long running Treasury of Victorian Murder series, Geary goes in a slightly different direction with LOUISE BROOKS, DETECTIVE.

Louise Brooks detail ggbain.32453u.jpg

Brooks was a famous actress in the silent film era. Her bobbed haircut started a craze as audiences emulated her looks. But she faded into obscurity in the 30s. She briefly returned to her hometown of Wichita, Kansas.  Louise recalls, “But that turned out to be another kind of hell. The citizens of Wichita either resented me having been a success or despised me for being a failure. And I wasn’t exactly enchanted with them. I must confess to a lifelong curse: My own failure as a social creature.”

This is where Rick Geary’s story begins…

LOUISE BROOKS

LOUISE BROOKS, Detective
Rick Geary
Stepping away for a bit from his growing and impressive body of work in the Treasury of Murder true crime series, Geary creates a fictional story around a favorite actress: Louise Brooks. Spun around her actual brief meteoric career as a smoldering film actress who popularized bangs, Geary fantasizes about her coming back to her home town of Wichita where she becomes intrigued by a murder involving a friend, a famous reclusive writer and a shady beau. Not before she gets herself in great danger will she emerge with the solution the police fail to grasp!
6×9, 80pp., B&W, hardcover, $15.99

Geary takes his love of American history and his careful pen to breathe life into this historical fiction, on sale in May.
