The Forbidden Harbor

By Teresa Radice & Stefano Turconi

9781681122328

In the summer of 1807, The Explorer, a ship from Her Majesty’s Navy recovers a young shipwreck off the coast of Siam, Abel, who can only remember his name. He soon becomes friends with the first officer, acting as a captain because the commander of the ship has apparently absconded with the ship’s treasure. Abel returns to England with The Explorer and finds accommodation at the inn run by the three fugitive captain’s daughters. Well before he can recover his memory, however, he will discover something deeply disturbing about himself, and he will understand the true nature of some of the people who helped him.

A haunting and intense book that digs into the soul of the protagonists as well as the reader, with a generous helping of good ‘ole fashioned salty adventure along with many a shanty sung, and a sprinkling of magic dust. Presented in a handsome old style, worn-looking hardcover, as if taken from a ship captain’s library. An uplifting, enthralling escape.

7 ½ x 10 ½, 320pp., B&W with color sketchbook, old-fashioned hardcover, $29.99.

Dungeon: Zenith Vol.3 – Back In Style
By Boulet, Joann Sfar, Lewis Trondheim

Taking a pause from the Monstres sub-series, the main Zenith mini series is back! This time with the art of Boulet but still written by the Sfar/Trondheim duo.

Two stories continue the heyday of Dungeon, in the first, Isis is to be married to the Keeper but she wants Herbert! Besides, the whole affair promises to ruin the Dungeon completely.

In the second, besides the continued Keeper financial mishaps, Herbert wishes to make his comeback to his hometown where his name is mud. He disguises himself with a potion that makes him ‘the mask of death’. Only one problem: if he laughs, he becomes himself again!

Dungeon: Monstres Vol. 2 – The Dark Lord
By Joann Sfar, Lewis Trondheim, Blanquet, Andreas

monstres2

Terra Amata has exploded into so many little floating islands and Herbert has become a very dark and very powerful lord, far from his goofy, shoot-from-the-belt self we all know. In both stories in this volume, the key is to find the map to the new world and great forces are in the way.

Whether it’s the Dark Lord or even a very uncompromising and very determined Marvin the Red, the new map must be found!
This sub-series presents guest stars including here Andreas, known for Rork and Capricorn.

Dungeon: Monstres Vol. 4 – Night of the Ladykiller
By
Joann Sfar, Lewis Trondheim, J-E. Vermot-Desroches, Yoann

dungmon4

Vulture sorcerer Horus, a ladykiller? Who knew? Yet, as the first story in this volume shows, he is accused of impregnating a slew of women. The second story takes a much lighter tone starring Grogro the big always hungry goofball seen in many stories before, especially in the Parade series. Here, he’s the hero, or at least tries to be, on a mission to fix a mess with a bunch of beer brewers. Question is: will he solve the problem… or just eat (and drink) it?

By Johann Sfar, Lewis Trondheim, Alfred, Mazan

dung_twilight4_300

The last two stories of Dungeon!

In High Septentrion, there has been a violent eruption on the planet of Terra Amata. It’s a scramble to find breathable air, but the wizened blind, mystical dragon the Dust King (Marvin) thinks that it is perhaps time for him to die heroically. However the feisty young Marvin the Red refuses to give up and plans to find a way out of this mess, including finding a way to actually breathe… Art by Alfred of “Why I Killed Peter.”

And in The End of Dungeon the more the islets of the planet Terra Amata move upward, the less there is of breathable oxygen. While Marvin the Red and Zakutu, daughter of the Grand Khân, attempt to protect the seven objects of Destiny, Herbert and the Dust King are forced to swear allegiance to the Dark Entity in order to gain access to breathable air.
All things must come to an end and so it is with the great Dungeon.

Ted Rall will also take part in the following ALA panel on Monday, June 24th:

Exploring Trauma and Recovery through Comics
9:00 am – 10:00 am, Washington Convention Center, 158A-B

Trauma is life-changing, from living through the explosive conflict of a war zone to recovering from personal ordeals. Eyewitness accounts are particularly well evoked in the constraints and freedoms of a graphic narrative. This panel will draw together creators who can speak from their first-hand knowledge of violence and the work that goes into expressing a traumatic event in comics. Attendees will learn about expressing strong emotion and experiences graphically, the difficulties of first-person narration and reportage, and receive suggestions for their collections.

TCAF 2019

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival was a blast! It’s one of the biggest and nicest comic festivals I have ever attended, and just like in 2015 (when I was there last) it was wonderful to be there. Even more so, because this time I was Featured Guest and had a premiering book: Love: a Discovery in Comics.

nbm-love

That’s me, loving my new book – and publishers Jeff Whitman and Terry Nantier in the background.

Another great thing this year was that I was one of five Dutch comic artists attending. Our national comics child prodigy Aimée de Jongh was there (okay, she’s not a kid anymore) promoting both Blossoms in Autumn and her new Taxi: Stories from the Back Seat.

This is her, signing just around the corner from where we were sitting:

tcaf_aimee2

Another colleague from home was Chad Bilyeu, who is originally from Cleveland, but has been in Holland for ages and is the author of the wonderfully revealing series Chad in Amsterdam.

Last but not least there was Typex, our comics rock star, whose masterpiece Andy (about Andy Warhol) is taking the comics world by storm.

The coolest thing was that I got to do a panel with him, about Dutch Comics, moderated by Mark Nevins:

panel_typex

Not only that – I also got to be on a panel about Science and Comics, with Maki Naro, Mike Holmes, Alison Wilgus and moderator Johanna Draper Carlson:

While Saturday went by in a frenzy of signing, panelling and generally being elated by everything, Sunday allowed for some time to chase for comics myself.

This is our loot:

The NBM table did very well, by the way! Here’s the Before picture of my end:

And this is the After…:

If you missed my cute little promotional booklet Ten Tips For A Broken Heart and are in the Toronto area – I dropped off a whole bunch at comic store The Beguiling.

Thanks to everyone who made TCAF 2019 such a memorable experience! We definitely hope to be back one day.

Publisher Terry Nantier will be on hand for the company and he’ll be joined by Margreet de Heer who is attending TCAF with the support of the Dutch Literature Foundation, and to celebrate the TCAF debut of her new book from NBM, Love: A History in Comics.

love_cover300

Love is a many-splendored thing, as comic artist Margreet de Heer has found out through several relationships and her marriage to fellow artist Yiri. How to describe it?

Is love passion, stability, friendship, or all of the above? In this comics exploration, the author investigates different aspects of love: is there really such a thing as finding The One? What happens in the brain when we fall in love? How can we keep long-term love? What to do about a broken heart? Margreet herself seems to have found her ideal partner in Yiri, but after so many years of marriage, how about that Seven Year Itch?

This book deals with many aspects of love, sex and relationships in a light-hearted, playful and often thought-provoking manner and is a fun and informative read for anyone who is in love or planning to be.

Also attending on behalf of NBM are Michael Cherkas and Larry Hancock who will on hand for the TCAF debut of The Silent Invasion Vol. 2: The Great Fear.

The Provocative Colette
By Annie Goetzinger & Rodolphe

pc

Many biographies describe this uncommon woman and author. It is her years of formation which are focused on here, from her marriage at the age of 20, until her divorce.

“One dies only from the first man,” she wrote in 1909. But this death was a new beginning, and the one that signed “Colette” from 1910 on gradually opened her eyes to her condition of a woman who was an exploited writer and a betrayed wife, and who will emancipate herself by writing, and with what talent!

Incredibly complex, powerfully determined, truly gifted, Colette challenged herself to reinvent her life and assert herself as a free woman. In her day, her behavior scandalized and vexed the establishment. But in the end, she helped to free women in their thinking and became member and then president of France’s prestigious Académie Goncourt, among many other honors as one of France’s preeminent authors. For mature readers.

Marie Antionette, Phantom Queen
By Annie Goetzinger & Rodolphe

9781681120294

During the 1930s, Maud, an artist, discovers she has a psychic gift. The first signs manifest themselves in the royal gardens of the Trianon where gradually she understands that a woman from the beyond is attempting to communicate with her.

The revelation is beyond belief: it is the ghost of Marie Antoinette appearing to her to share a terrible secret that has tormented her for centuries. After being guillotined, the Queen is said to have been thrown into a common grave but then exhumed and buried with her husband, Louis XVI, in the Saint-Denis basilica. Yet the ghost tells Maud that her remains are still in the pit, on which a chapel stands today. The queen asks Maud to move her body to the right place so she can finally find peace and no longer haunt people.

Part fantastic ghost story, part biography, this is a delicious beautifully illustrated look into French revolutionary history by the artist of the bestselling Girl in Dior.

It’s New York City in the 1980s and Ted Rall is in college. Everything is fine before his pranks, lack of focus and restlessness get him expelled. Unable to find a job and rejected by his parents, he considers suicide. By happenstance he finds comfort in the arms of many women as he bed-hops around the five boroughs. It’s better than homelessness, but the psychic toll of selling himself and his affection was higher than he imagined.

Both acidly funny and brutally honest, Rall, a cartoonist both beloved and reviled for his edgy politics, pours out his guts in this remembrance of this most difficult chapter in his life. Revised paperback edition.

ZOMBILLENIUM VOLS. 1-2: GRETCHEN/HUMAN RESOURCES
By Arthur de Pins

zombcover1_2

Francis von Bloodt, vampire, a good family man, manages the theme park Zombillenium.

They don’t just hire anyone, at Zombillenium: mere mortals need not apply, the park works only with genuine werewolves, vampires and zombies. This is what Aurelian gets to discover as, burnt out, deceived by his wife, he finally gets ‘hired’ in spite of himself in this strange business. Gretchen, a plucky trainee witch, helps him get around…

In the second chapter, Tempers are flaring around Zombillenium, the monster amusement park run by monsters. When one hires only the dead (or witches!) in a region where unemployment is in the double digits, one must expect some friction. But things get particularly ugly when the park’s security is breached from two sides: activists and a very strange visitor, mom to two peculiar sons the head of the park seems to remember from somewhere… Gretchen and Aurelian do their best to help save a precarious explosive situation!

All presented in De Pins’ trademark tongue-in-cheek jubilant black humor and stunning art, combining volumes 1 and 2.

ALBERT EINSTEIN, THE POETRY OF REAL
By Manuel Garcia Iglesias and Marwan Kahil

When he’s five years old, Albert Einstein’s father offers him a compass that triggers in him an irrepressible need to understand the laws of the universe. At first a simple employee of the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, the young Einstein published in 1905 a series of scientific articles that question everything that was thought to be known in the world of physics. His theory, summed up by the formula E = mc2, opens to humanity the doors of the power of the atom… Legendary Genius, but also a great humanist, he lives through the first half of the 20th century, with all its horrors and contradictions, in the service of science, but distraught by what man’s madness is capable of doing with it.
