THE BLACK DAHLIA
By Rick Geary

9781681121789

Now in paperback! On January 15, 1947, a woman was walking with her daughter in a Los Angeles neighborhood. She passed what looked to be a discarded manikin. It turned out to be the body of Elizabeth Short: posed, drained of blood, meticulously scrubbed, and cut in two. From this point, Geary reconstitutes and reveals for us the life of this 22 year old woman who had become known as “Black Dahlia” because of her striking appearance. She had moved to LA to make it in show business.

How could her life have ended in such a ghastly fashion? Was it a jealous boyfriend, a rejected suitor, or one of LA’s notorious mafia connections whom she had apparently been dabbling with? The case gets more complex when, days later, a local newspaper receives a cut-out letter from an anonymous “Black Dahlia Avenger” admitting to the crime. More letters follow toying with the LAPD.

Eisner Award winner Geary takes us through all the twists and turns in one of the most captivating unsolved mysteries of the 20th century in this latest installment of his Treasury of XXth Century Murder.

THE AXE-MAN OF NEW ORLEANS
By Rick Geary

9781681121796

Now in paperback! Nights of terror! A city awash in blood! New Orleans right after the First World War. The party returns to the Big Easy but someone looks to spoil it. Grocers are being murdered in the dead of night by someone grabbing their axe and hacking them right in their own cushy beds! The pattern for each murder is the same: a piece of the door is removed for entry, the axe is borrowed on the property, and the assailant aims straight for the head! Why? How could he fit through that piece in the door? The man is never found for sure but speculations abound which Geary presents with his usual gusto!

NBM March 2018 Releases

Here are upcoming titles, now being solicited for a March 2018 release.

NEW!
THE INITIATES
By Etienne Davodeau

intiates

The sold out hardcover now in paperback.

Etienne Davodeau is a comic artist. He doesn’t know much about the world of wine-making.

Richard Leroy is a wine-maker. He’s rarely even read comics.

But these two are full of good will and curiosity. Why do we choose to spend one’s life writing and creating comics or producing wine? How and for whom do we do them?
To answer these questions, for more than a year, Etienne went to work in Richard’s vineyards and cellar. Richard, in return, leapt into the world of comics. They opened a lot of bottles and read many comics. They traveled around, meeting authors and wine-makers sharing their passion for their jobs.

The first time a book explores the nature of a man’s vocation with a true life representation of it from two very different perspectives. They get to realize they both have that precious and necessary power to bring people together.

With guest appearances by Trondheim (Dungeon, Little Nothings), Emmanuel Guibert (The Photographer) and Marc-Antoine Matthieu (Museum Vaults).

8×11, 272pp., B&W trade pb: $19.99  ISBN: 978168112133851999

The Louvre Collection: THE CROSS-EYED MUTT
By Etienne Davodeau

cover artb.indd

Fabian is supervisor at the Louvre. He loves his job. He also loves Mathilde. When it comes time, she presents him to her family in their vast country house and not without some apprehension, as the Benion clan is a bit special. There’s her father, Louis, who heads since 1975 the family furniture company founded in 1947, and two brothers, Maxime and Joseph. They’re not bad guys, just rather clumsy and with a decidedly unsubtle sense of humor. The fact that Fabian works in the Louvre is a welcome coincidence, since they just found in the attic a painting by an ancestor in the nineteenth century. It’s a sorry representation of a cross-eyed mutt.

What is the value? ask the Benion. Is this an eyesore or a masterpiece?

Fabian, pretty embarrassed, punts on the question. So for the Benion, case closed, if it ain’t an eyesore then no doubt it has its place on the walls of the Louvre! Fabian is left hoping the whole delusion will just go away, until one day the two brothers show up at the Louvre and ask. Getting the Cross-Eyed Mutt into the Louvre would demonstrate his commitment to becoming a member of the Benion family! Fabian is now in a pickle when he meets Mr. André Balouchi, an oddball frequent visitor of the museum who turns out to have quite a bit of clout…

A raucous satirical comedy that asks: Who decides what makes a work of art worthy of being in a major museum?

LULU ANEW
By Etienne Davodeau

cover ort.indd

At the end of yet another unproductive job interview, Lulu, on a whim, takes off for the shore just to get away from it all. She’s got a husband and kids left bewildered but it’s nothing against them. This is just her time, getting away from the grind and being taken for granted with no other plan than savoring it. Surprised at her own temerity, she meets other people on the edge of the world. It wasn’t meant to be for long. It wasn’t meant to be anything but in the end, thrilling, fun, and possibly dangerous, this improvised experience will make of Lulu a different woman. By the author of the acclaimed The Initiates.

NEW!
THE TRUE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID
By Rick Geary

kid billy

‘Being an authentic narrative of the final days in Billy the Kid’s brief and turbulent life.’

One of our folk legends of the great Wild West, William H. Bonney went from cowboy and gunslinger for a rancher to pure outlawry forever dodging justice in New Mexico when it wasn’t even a state. On the one hand, he was charming, fun-loving –often at social events like dances-, quite appealing to the ladies. Also conversant in Spanish, “Billito” was popular with the Spanish speaking crowd.

On the other hand, he had no compunction to coldly kill a man, a sheriff, a deputy, anyone who got in his way rustling cattle or horses for an illicit living. He also proved hard to keep in jail even when caught. It is probably his feats of derring-do escaping from jails that made him most famous and this is the main subject of this biography following him until he is shot in pitch darkness by lawmen obsessed with getting rid of him.

Review Round-Up: RICK GEARY’S A TREASURY OF VICTORIAN MURDER COMPENDIUM II

Collecting five (The Borden Tragedy, The Mystery of Mary Rogers, The Saga of the Bloody Benders, The Case of Madeleine Smith, The Murder of Abraham Lincoln) previously published volumes of Geary’s work, this compendium is a must have.

“The high quality that writer/artist Geary has maintained for his “Treasury of Victorian Murder” true crime series since its 1987 inception is easy to take for granted…Highly recommended for mature readers of graphic novels, mysteries history, and true crime; violent and disturbing content.”

Library Journal

“It’s a densely crafted volume showing Geary’s dedication to detail and his own sense of investigation into true stories of the strange and macabre. This is exactly the kind of book to cozy up to as winter sets in.”

–Bleeding Cool

“Geary meticulously researches each murder, and presents all the evidence to the reader in as objective a fashion as he can, in a faux-woodcut style that really could pass for the kind of illustrative artwork that preceded photography — if it wasn’t so much better. For one thing, there wasn’t much irony in those days, and Geary is forever arching an eyebrow artistically at the deadpan captions.  All of which serves the narrative, which is invariably gripping.”

The Indiana Gazette

“Each of these stories, although set long ago, involves elements we can identify with, whether the spreading of rumors or sensationalized journalism or the question of how much to trust our neighbors or the ruinous dedication of political groups to lost causes. ”

Comics Worth Reading

“All the stories are fascinating studies of human behavior in general, and of the peculiarities of Victorian life in particular.”

Everybody is Talking About RICK GEARY

The Legendary Rick Geary

Last week we announced that Rick Geary’s latest volume of The Treasury of XXth Century Murder, Lover’s Lane: The Hall-Mills Mystery will be released this June.

Here’s what iFanboy said just about the solicitation:

“Each time Rick Geary releases a new comic on a historical murder, you can be sure that I’ll recommend it.”

Geary’s true crime books continue to attract readers and fans years after their release.

Check out what some folks have been saying recently:

A Treasury of Victorian Murder V.7: The Murder of Abraham Lincoln

“Rick Geary once again proves his artistic and story-telling chops in this volume. He packs an amazing number of historical references into this beautifully rendered tale while also making it compelling and suspenseful, even to readers familiar with the facts”

Graphic Novel Resources

A Treasury of XXth Century Murder The Terrible Axe-Man of New Orleans

“Geary’s artwork, as usual is wonderful.  No one does b&w like he does and his artwork is simply perfect for the mood and atmosphere of murder and the macabre.”

Back to Books

A Treasury of Victorian Murder V. 3: The Borden Tragedy

“Geary does his usual top-notch job of rendering historical scenes with great accuracy and detail as well as catching readers up in a tight plot.”

Graphic Novel Resources

Treasury of XXth Century Murder: The Lives of Sacco & Vanzetti

“In short, The Lives of Sacco and Vanzetti details a court case that is so full of improper procedures, sketchy evidence, and outright tampering that reading Geary’s account makes you wonder how on earth this wasn’t declared a mistrial. That’s part of what makes Geary’s Treasury books so powerful; he has a gift of pulling you deep into these people’s stories and making you feel like you’re living alongside these news events. “

Read About Comics

“His meticulous art injects a sense of drama and intrigue into the proceedings.”
